You’ve got it all covered: your flights are booked, your ground transport is planned, your hotels are reserved and tours are picked out. What else could a trip abroad require? You might be forgetting one of the most important parts of global travel — cheap international calls.

Or, in other words, a reliable way to stay in touch with friends, family or even contact emergency help, should the need arise. And you’ll want to avoid costly roaming charges on your mobile device. Or, if you’re not using a mobile device, you’ll still do well to find a way to make the cheapest international calls.

Many travelers use international calling cards, or an online or mobile app version of pre-paying for call time up front, and using that call time when you see fit and at a rate established by the provider (and often significantly lower than a direct long-distance call).
